PHILADELPHIA, PA — Please Touch Museum® introduces a new community outreach program — Books to Know, Book to Grow! This new literacy based program for preschoolers, their teachers and parents uses Please Touch Museum’s core values of caring for children, fun, creativity, innovation, and learning. Books to Know, Books to Grow is presented by The Albert M. Greenfield Foundation.
Books to Know, Books to Grow! is a five week program for preschool age children. Each session lasts one and a half hours during regular school hours. The first cycle begins February 21st and will run through March 21st at Belmont Head Start in Philadelphia. The session will begin with a book reading based on Please Touch Museum’s library of Book Award winners. Students will then engage in fun, developmentally appropriate literacy and math activities. The sessions will also incorporate movement, music, art and song.
Books to Know, Books to Grow! is conducted inside selected site classrooms. The program provides activities which help children develop their basic academic skills. Participation in the program will support children as they grow to identify, process, and demonstrate an understanding of topics that correlate with the School District of Philadelphia’s pre-kindergarten curriculum.
The program will culminate with an event at Please Touch Museum. Students will have the opportunity to play at Please Touch Museum and view a theater production in the Virginia Evans Theater. Parents are welcome to attend the culminating event with their children.
The goals of this program include increasing a preschooler’s vocabulary by at least ten words over the five week program, helping students build a desire to learn and increasing openness to new experiences for children, teachers and parents.
